Jens Long Nguyen is a 4th year medical student, currently attending the Medical Student Research Programme in Bergen, presented one of the projects under theWest Pead Research groups (affiliated to MRCRM).
Title: “The regenerative effect of Wharton’s Jelly stem cells on preterm lung disease”
Abstract: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disease that affects 50-60 % of babies born extremely preterm (i.e. three months too early). In Norway this constitutes approximately 300 newborns each year. BPD is a devastating disease and can cause chronic respiratory and neurological impairment throughout life.
Currently there is no effective treatment for BPD, and there is an excessive demand for research and new ideas to find a curative treatment for this disease.
Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stem Cells (WJ-MSC) are stem cells found in the umbilical cord tissue. Multiple clinical studies have shown promising regenerative effects of these cells on several diseases. Our goal is to utilize WJ-MSCs and their secretome, to prevent and treat BPD in preterm born babies.
